Abstract:
Third Generation Wireless Networks are finally beginning
to be deployed commercially around the world this year. These
networks are extending voice services to multimedia services.
This presentation will address design challenges faced by
systems beyond 3G, as well as, new and emerging wireless technologies
which will enable us to meet those challenges, including the
evolution towards fully broadband networks and techniques
for making these broadband networks very flexible and offer
context and content aware multimedia communications services.
Biography:
Dr. Al Javed, Vice-President, Wireless Networks Technology,
Nortel Networks
Dr. Al Javed joined Nortel in 1977 as a member of the scientific
staff in the system engineering division. Before joining Nortel,
he served on the faculties of the University of Alberta, and
the University of Engineering and Technology in Pakistan.
Since joining Nortel in 1977, Dr. Javed has held a number
of management positions in the areas of system design, systems
planning, technology development, and product development.
Since 1988, he has been leading wireless R&D activities
in Nortel Networks. From 1988-95, he was responsible for wireless
access systems development leading to the development of Nortel’s
first cellular radio products. From 1995-99, he oversaw the
development of wireless technologies for advanced wireless
systems and product development for the wireless access business.
Since 1999, he has been leading technology research and advanced
product development for Wireless Networks.
Dr. Javed is also the technical prime for the external research
program for Wireless Networks. He has received numerous Nortel
awards, including the Chairman’s Award of Excellence
in Innovation, and the CALA President’s Award of Excellence
in Innovation. In 1999, the Ottawa Centre of Research and
Innovation (OCRI) recognized him for his leadership in innovation.
Dr. Javed is on the Advisory Board of Wireless Auburn University
and the Advisory Council of Nortel Networks Institute at University
of Waterloo, Canada.
Dr. Javed has a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the
University of Alberta, Canada.
