In spite of the recession in the rest of the technology industry, the growth of wireless LAN deployments in last few years have been phenomenal, both in terms of the number of units deployed and the number of companies working on WLAN products and technologies. This workshop will present detailed discussion of WLAN and RFIC technologies. Many companies have used Si CMOS, SiGe BiCMOS, GaAs processes and combinations of these technologies to meet the cost and performance objectives of the2.4and 5 GHz WLAN systems. Traditionally, GaAs HBTs have been found to be most suitable for PA functions while Si CMOS captured the low cost transceiver slot. We will have a lively discussion on which technologies are best suited for which WLAN IC functions. Common pitfalls to be avoided for successful RFIC design for WLAN application will also be discussed.

High integration on a chip is important to achieve low cost, however different process like GaAs HBT and SiGe transceiver filters etc. are better suited to modular integration. MCMs offer high integration of filters, passive components and active transceiver radio and base band functions in a small package. The choice of chip- or module-level integration to achieve low cost and high performance objectives will be presented by the speakers and debated by the audience. Overview of the standards activity in the WLAN will be discussed including the latest standards activity. Another area interest lately has been the integration of cellular and WLAN networks. This is made easier by multiband multifunction chipsets that integrate 802.11 WLAN, GSM, GPRS, WCDMA functions in a single chipsets. These and other future trends in WLAN technologies will also be presented at this workshop.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Overview of RF IC and module technologies for WLAN applications
  • Comparison of WLAN SiGe and Si CMOS technologies
  • Transceiver Architectures for wireless Systems
  • WLAN power amplifier RFICs
  • RF CMOS WLAN transceivers
  • WLAN standards activity
  • Status of successful WLAN deployments
  • Optimization of WLAN networks
  • Integration of WLAN and cellular networks
  • Direct Conversion WLAN 802.11, GSM, GPRS, WCDMA chipset
  • Future WLAN technology trends
