"A Historic Review of UWB Radar and Communications and Future Directions"

Abstract

This talk will review the development of time domain Electromagnetics by this writer and others over more than a 40 year period and show how the work contributed to the growth of Ultra WideBand (UWB) radar and communications. It will also review some of the latest advancements made in the field of communications by investigators making presentations in the UWB area at RAWCON and attempt to put their work in perspective. Also some remaining problem areas will be identified.

Biography

Gerald Ross received the BSEE degree from City College of New York in 1952, and the MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Polytechnic University in 1955 and 1963, respectively. In 1979 he completed the Executive Management Program at Harvard University.

From 1958 to 1965 he was Research Section Head at Sperry Gyroscope Co., in Great Neck, New York, and he then moved to the Sperry Research Center in Sudbury, MA, where he held a number of technical Management positions until 1981. In that year, he founded ANRO Engineering and is presently its President and CEO.

Gerry’s field of interest includes microwave networks, impulse (ultra-wideband) radar and carrier-free communications systems, gigabit pulse technology, and batteryless sensor systems. He has published technical papers in 70 accredited journals, has been granted 58 patents and has 2 pending, and was a contributing author to three textbooks. He is a registered professional engineer in NY, MA, and FL, and is a member of Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, and Eta Kappa Nu. He was elected IEEE Fellow in 1970, and was elected member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1995.
