Abstract
Meshed-based wireless networks are one
of the most promising architectural innovations in
wireless communications, and one that is now seeing
significant application in production systems. Meshes
can be fixed, mobile, or hybrid, and can be based
on fixed routing or fully-adaptive, self-organizing
topologies. They are also applicable to geographies
from very compact to metropolitan areas and beyond.
We've assembled a panel of experts to explore the
possibilities and the pitfalls inherent in mesh-based
networks. Some of the issues we'll explore include
routing algorithms, radio (physical layer) concerns
and opportunities, power consumption issues and strategies,
and the role of meshes in emerging fourthgeneration
wireless broadband networks. We'll also compare the
mesh approach with other possibilities, and conclude
with some speculation as to the impact of meshes on
emerging wireless networks and applications.
